후세 사람들에게 미켈란젤로는 셰익스피어나 베토벤처럼

인간의 비극적인 경험을 가장 깊이 있게 보편적으로 표현하고자 했던

몇 안 되는 위대한 예술가들 가운데 한 사람으로 기억되고 있다.

그의 작품들에 대한 큰 명성과는 대조적으로,

그의 작품이 후세 예술에 끼친 영향은 상대적으로 제한되어 있다.

이는 아마도 미켈란젤로에 의해 연상되는

거의 우주적으로 장엄한 독특한 표현 형태들이

모방을 어렵게 한 것으로 보인다.

그의 작품에서 일부 영향을 받아 거의 전적으로 의존하는 경우가 더러 있는데,

이런 식으로 작업했던 예술가로서 가장 재능이 있었던 예술가는 다니엘레 다 볼테라였다.

17세기에 미켈란젤로는 해부학적 소묘의 일인자로 여겨졌지만,

그의 예술의 보다 폭넓은 다른 요소들은 별로 주목받지 못했다.

마니에리스모 양식을 추구한 예술가들은

그의 벽화에서 나타나는 압축된 공간이나 그 이후에 〈승리〉에서 사용한

구불구불한 자세를 채택한 반면에,

19세기의 거장 오귀스트 로댕은 미완성으로 남겨놓은 대리석 덩어리의 효과를

자기 것으로 소화하여 발전시켰다.

17세기 바로크의 거장들이 그를 가장 잘 참조한 것으로 보이나,

이는 실물 그대로의 유사성을 배척하기 위해 변형된 방식에서였다.

조각가 베르니니 다음으로 미켈란젤로의 작품들을 가장 잘 활용한 미술가로는

플랑드르의 화가인 루벤스를 손꼽을 수 있다
